As the Energy Council Act went into full effect, Prime Minister Huseyn Suhrawardy established thePakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) in March 1956.
Its first chair was Nazir Ahmad – an experimental physicist.

Ishrat Hussain Usmani (Urdu: عقرت حسقن عثمانق) (April 15, 1917 – June 17, 1992) NI, I. Well known as H. Usmani, he was a Pakistani nuclear physicist and an official who later chaired the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). He also oversaw the establishment of the Space Exploration Commission until 1971.
